I refer to Boston's Zakim bridge as the "ugly bridge". I thought all cable-stayed bridges were inherently ugly, until I saw pictures of the Millau bridge. It's well worth clicking to see a slightly bigger version here of the picture on the right.

I may be in a minority, but I've always liked the Zakim bridge. It may not be quite as etherial as the Millau, but the way its towers match the Bunker Hill monument's tower is fitting.

Sue, my mom, and I went in to Boston for the Mother's day event where they opened the Zakim bridge for foot traffic. We had to wait several hours in the rain. While we waited, my mom decided to test out her new Gore-tex hiking boots by jumping up and down in some nearby puddles. It was delightful to see people turn around prepared to vent their righteous wrath on some child and then swallow their words when confronted by a woman of 70!
