PermaLinkConfiguring The Lotus Notes Client For GMail POP3 Access
12:00:10 PM

About six weeks ago, I posted an article on my old blog that indicated that the Notes 6.52 Client didn't work with Google's GMail POP3 access. I'm happy to say that it works now. Neither the POP3 nor SMTP connections had been working. The debug infromation I had collected indicated that there was a problem with the Google side reading the SMTP AUTH LOGIN data sent by Notes (which I verified was legal, at least according to a Postel's Law interpretation of the relevant RFC)., but it didn't give any clue what the POP3 problem was.

I submitted problem reports to both Google and IBM, and -- though it took a while -- Google got back to me. They sent me detailed configuration instructions for the POP and SMTP account document in the Notes Address Book. They haven't yet added Notes to their list of supported clients, but perhaps they eventually will, after I let them know that it did indeed work. The key factor in their instructions was setting the SSL protocol version (on the Advanced tab) to "V3.0 with V2.0 handshake". That immediately got the outbound SMTP working. I suspect that Google also changed their code because I doubt that the SSL handshake has anything to do with the SMTP AUTH LOGIN command parsing. The POP3 config info that Google sent also indicated that the protocol version setting should be "V3.0 with V2.0 handshake", but that didn't fix the problem. It got me working on it, however, and I noticed that the default in POP account documents configured with SSL for the Accept SSL site certificates setting on the Advanced tab is "No". Changing that to "Yes" fixed the problem. Interestingly, you can leave that setting at "No" for SMTP and it still works, but POP requires it.

So, here's a summary of the working settings for GMail POP3 and SMTP access in Lotus Notes 6.52:

POP3 Account document
Basics Tab: Account name = whatever; Account server; Login; Protocol=POP; SSL=Enabled; Only from location=whatever

Protocol Configuration Tab: Leave mail on server=No (according to Google instructions)

Advanced Tab: Port number=995; Accept SSL site certificates=Yes; Accept expired SSL certificate=Yes; Send SSL certificates when asked=No; Verify account server name with remote server's certificate: Disabled; SSL protocol version=Version 3.0 with 2.0 handshake

SMTP Account document
Basics Tab: Account name = whatever; Account server; Login; Protocol=SMTP; SSL=Enabled; Only from location=whatever

Advanced Tab: Port number=465; Accept SSL site certificates=No; Accept expired SSL certificate=Yes; Send SSL certificates when asked=No; Verify account server name with remote server's certificate: Disabled; SSL protocol version=Version 3.0 with 2.0 handshake

Thanks for the info. I've gotten my client working with your tutorial. I'm curious though, a similar configuration in my server document has not given me any successful results? Have you been able to get mail to route through Domino to gmail? I'm trying to have fetchmail POP my gmail messages and locally push email up to the Domino SMTP server. They all seem to talk, but so far fetchmail has not been able to pierce the SMTP listener, nor has outgoing mail successfully been sent to gmail's SMTP servers.

Thanks in advance,

2. Richard Schwartz02/14/2005 07:06:33 PM

I don't believe that the Domino server's SMTP task supports connections to an authenticated relay in release 6.x. In fact, I'm quite sure of that, because it's the topic of a current discussion in the Lotus' private BP Tech Forum. Since outbound relay through GMail requires authentication, that's definitely not going to work. Regarding fetchmail, I've never looked into that particular solution. Have you turned on any debug variables in notes.ini on the server to see what's happening in the SMTP conversation? I should also mention that, although it isn't free, there's an alternative called POP3Fido that you can find at Also, Volker Weber mentioned another solution on his blog at one point, so you might want to search a bit over on to find the reference.

Hi guys, thanks a lot for the info!:) my incoming pop3 is working now:) however after I set it up on my Lotus, it still says that "remote system no longer responding" and i cant send outgoing emails?? any thoughts guys ? thanks a million

I'm able to download gmail to my Notes client using POP, but I can't upload SMTP mail, even using the settings you provided above. The error I get on the Notes Replicator is SSL Bad Peer Certificate. Connection Refused. I used Notes Tools to obtain Internet cross-certificates for Inc/L=Mountain View/ST=California/C=US, and Inc/L=Mountain View/ST=California/C=US. I have not been able to create a cross certificate for The Issued By on the cross certificates is my Notes ID, not my gmail ID... but that shouldn't make a difference.

My notes client is 5.0.1a. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

5. Richard Schwartz06/21/2005 03:17:23 PM

Have you turned on debugging features as described here ?

Also, I'm drawing an inference from Lotus technote 1188614 (see here )... That error message might indicate that your client does not support any SSL cipher that matches one available on the server. (Whether or not we can tell if that's the case might depend on other information that you get in the debug traces.) If that is the case, I don't think there's much that can be done about it except to upgrade to a newer Notes client. Is it possible that you have one of the old "International" versions of the client software that dates back to the time before US export laws were relaxed enough to allow export of strong encryption? A lot of companies with a mixture of US and non-US users had standardized on giving everyone the "International" version, so even if you're in the US it still might have been the case.

6. Peter Benton06/23/2005 10:52:50 AM

Thank you for the suggestions. I turned on the debugging for my Notes client, tried sending email via smtp to my gmail account, got the same message: ssl error: invalid peer. The smtpClient portion of the debug log follows:
Very top of debug log (SMTP section)
06/23/2005 10:05:53 AM Index update process started
06/23/2005 10:05:54 AM SMTPClient: Starting to transfer 2 messages to for user CN=Peter M Benton/O=Informed Decisions

The error message SSL handshake error: 1C7Bh
is precisely the one in your second suggestion (good catch!)... no ciphers in common. The version of Notes client I am using is 5.0.1a, North American Edition. I am able to upgrade to 6.0.1, Global English Edition. Do you think that edition will have additional ciphers? Is there a way to determine what ciphers are used by Notes Client? Is there a way to determine what ciphers are used by GMAIL for SSL? Can you suggest a next step? Is upgrading to Notes client 6.0.1 likely to do it?

One other interesting detail:
I tried sending the same two messages to gmail using smtp, ssl disabled.
the Notes client believes the messages were sent (they disappear from SMTP.BOX),
but you can see from the debug log for the smtpClient (below) that gmail says: "Must issue a STARTTLS command first 13sm30343wrl"

ditto....have the same problem....any clue how to resolve this.....

8. Richard Schwartz08/10/2005 08:45:11 AM

The best course appears to be to upgrade to a more recent version of the Notes client.

9. William Leung09/26/2005 07:39:25 AM

I am using notes client 7 and the pop3 still didn't work using the instruction above. any clue?

10. Cheeven Tsai10/15/2005 07:20:17 PM

After I change the "Accept SSL site certificates" to "Yes", it works.

I am using Notes Client 7.0

11. Richard Schwartz10/15/2005 07:50:55 PM

I upgraded to 7 recently, and tested my gmail connection today. It is still working for me using the same configuration information above.

Dear Experts

Pls help me..... I am trying to configure my notes client 6.5.4 to retrieve and send Gmail but I cannot receive any mails though there is no error prompt during replication. For sending emails out I have can send any mails that are small size, however, if I have attached a file from 70kb upwards, it doesnt go out - prompts 'network operation didnt complete in reasonable amount of time'

Anybody can help me on this is much appreicated and thanked in advance.

Warm Regards

Dear Richard.

Thankyou for your helpful article on getting Gmail to work with Notes.

15. Nir Ganani12/26/2005 10:04:35 AM

Stephan (number 13) - i'm also using 6.5.4 and with the addition of Cheeven (number 10) - it works like charm.

Thanks Richard, Cheeven!

18. dhiraj02/07/2006 01:41:39 PM

i m using lotus notes 6.0 and am not able to use gmail to send and recieve mail. pls help me.

19. Richard Schwartz02/07/2006 02:28:43 PM

@18: I can't help you since you've given me no additional information about your configuration, what you have tried to do, and what happens when you try to send and receive mail. You also left no contact information. I must also confess that I don't have any machines running 6.0 at this time, so it will be difficult for me to run any tests that simulate your environment. Perhaps it would be better for you to go to the Lotus forums on IBM's developerWorks site to find some help there.

20. Shaukat Ali Amlani02/12/2006 02:55:22 AM

Hi guys! I hope somebody can help me. I cant seem to make it work. Im using Notes 7 and it doesnt have some of the options above like port settings. hope somebody could help me tnx in advance!

22. Damien O'Brien04/24/2006 12:45:46 PM

I noticed that a few people where having problems getting this working with Notes 7. I had a problem that I didn't see mentioned above. When trying to connect I was getting the following in the Notes debug log;

[15102] Connect Interrogation of Established SSL Session vs. Policy Failed.
The Notes client itself was reporting something about an Invalid Server certificate.

I'd followed the instructions Rich had given but had no joy connecting to the gmail pop server.

I'm not 100% sure what the error means but I reckoned it had something to do with the GMail SSL cert not being trusted. I fixed the problem as follows;
Open the User Security->Identity Of Others->Authorities dialog.
In the Certificate dropdown choose "All" (to view all authority certs)
In my installation - None of the usual CA certs were trusted (the likes of VeriSign, Baltimore, etc..)
I just trusted all these 3rd part CA certs (presumably the GMail SSL cert is signed by one of these guys (I didn't have time to figure out which one).
Once I'd done this Notes was able to make the SSL conection to the GMail server to download mail.
I don't think enabling trust on these 3rd party CA certs will be a security risk as these are usually trusted by the likes of IE, etc..

23. Richard Schwartz04/24/2006 01:37:44 PM

Hey, thanks Damien! That's an important addition to the sequence. I'm not sure why I didn't run into it. I had probably trusted the particular cert already, I guess.

24. andrew c05/23/2006 09:18:23 AM

Hi - thanks for that, pop works like a charm for R5

25. Reggie06/08/2006 07:06:44 PM

Richard, I am looking at my connection doc in my names.nsf and do not see a place anywhere to enter pop/smtp info are these entries made on the server side connection document? I'm using a notes v7.0.1 in standalone not connected to a domino server

thanks in advance

26. Richard Schwartz06/09/2006 09:07:06 AM

@25 Reggie: THe configuration is done in Account documents, not in Connection documents. You should see the "Accounts" view in the same list as "Connections", underneat the "Advanced" selector in the personal address book.

i'm not able to access(pop) yahoo through lotusnote 6.5.plz help me...

30. Richard Schwartz06/14/2006 03:08:13 PM

@Kawa: What version of the Notes client are you using? Have you tried the troubleshooting procedure shown here?...
The information you get by setting the debug parameters in the notes.ini file is the first thing that you need to look at.

@29 Deeraj: I have never tried pop access to Yahoo. I wasn't even aware that pop access was available.

31. Jason Ungerer06/29/2006 03:13:24 AM

i have implemented the settings mentioned above, but how or what do i do on the notes client to 'download' mail from my gmail account?

any idea on what should be thje problem

I am using Note 7 on Window XP Professional 2002 SP 2

33. Richard Schwartz07/03/2006 12:08:43 PM

@31: Use the "send and receive mail" pick in the "Quicklinks" control at the lower right of the Notes window. Or use the Replicator tab.

34. Tony Wilson08/11/2006 02:00:54 PM

Thanks to every body,

Tonight I have been trying to hook up my Notes 7.0 with Gmail and did not succeed when setting "Accept SSL site certificate = Yes" for SMTP Account Document. Later I changed it to "=NO", the same as that for POP3 Account Document, then both Send and Received worked well.
I do not think I like Notes in terms of its user-friendliness, speed and robustness, though it has some features which others do not have.
Free Yahoo Mail cannot be hooked up with any client email now as far as I know (But you can if you pay for, maybe $19 per year).

Thanks again,

35. Rajiv Juneja09/03/2006 10:07:41 AM

I am using Lotus notes 7 and XPSP2. I have configured My lotus notes as suggested by Richard and even trusted all 3rd party CAs as Damien suggested but still unable to send receive mails. The error messages is "POP3 protocol error returned"

Please Help

36. chandan dutta10/06/2006 08:02:28 AM

i have configured notes 7.0.1 according to your advice with gmail, but its not working. can you send me full instructions on how to configure notes 7 for accessing gmail, starting from scratch...

37. Richard Schwartz10/06/2006 12:43:17 PM

The configuration I have already described above has worked for me with Domino 7, 7.0.1 and 7.0.2.

38. Simon Crouch10/30/2006 09:50:48 AM

I've got Notes 7.0 and using your configuration I am managing to get my googlemail to retreive from the server (pop) but when I go to send an email I keep getting "SSL Certificate is Invalid" Once I've sorted the SSL I believe the configuration above will work.

39. Rich Moore12/26/2006 01:59:20 PM

I have followed all the setup suggestions here, but I still keep getting "SSL bad peer certificate. Connection refused."

Damien mentioned (above) to be sure the User Security settings are set to trust the CA certs in the list. Unfortunately, I don't see any certs in that list, no matter which option I select. When I look in my NAB under Advanced, Certificates, I see all the standard Internet certificates. It just looks like I can't apply any of them to my security settings - and thus I can't config the Trusts.

Any ideas?

Rich Moore

40. Richard Schwartz12/26/2006 05:18:11 PM

Under User Security - Authorities, if you switch the drop-down to "All Internet" you ought to be able to see the list of certs. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, though. I don't have anything showing up as trusted there -- but then again, it's been several months since I attempted to download from gmail.

41. Rich Moore12/27/2006 05:58:57 PM

Got it working. Since I use Notes to pull down POP from several other sources (yahoo, my ISP, etc.), I was very much confused by the roadblocks with gmail. So I installed a fresh install of the Notes 7.0.2 client to another computer and did the basic standalone POP account config - just answered all the 1st-time questions.

Bada-boom, bada-bing - it worked fine with gmail. (?????) I'm not sure why that one worked and my other computer didn't. So I just copied the necessary Notes files (ID, mailbox.nsf, names.nsf) from computer #2 to computer #1.

I also noticed that #2 has more Internet Certs than #1 has. So I just did a copy/paste from the names.nsf on 2 to the names.nsf on 1.

So I'm not sure which of the many changes (or combinations thereof) I made actually solved the problem. But the end result is that its working. (Yeah...)

42. Mike Crowley01/04/2007 02:42:01 PM

I've tried to enable logging per this article -
But when I do these steps using Notes 7.0.2, I don't get any file created in the folder, and I noticed the article was for 4.x and 5.x. I was wondering if there was a different setting for 7.0?

Mike Crowley

43. Mike Crowley01/04/2007 03:11:12 PM

Never mind, I found it all in log.nsf. Thanks anyway.

44. richard dew02/06/2007 10:31:35 AM

I have configured my Notes 7 with my gmail account but when I replicate down my new emails it time stamps them as being sent that day and time that i replicated. Obviously this is not the case as the mail sat in gmail has the proper time stamps on them.

Any ideas how I change this cause if i dont replicate down any mail for a week then I wont know when the mail was actually originally sent

45. Romeo02/10/2007 06:21:05 AM

Thanks for the tips guys. I followed all your instruction above.

But it seems, my LN is not directly accesing the internet connection, in order to see my mails from gmail I have to press the send & receive mail in the quick pick or replication.

How to make my LN automatically connected to my gmail.

Any help guys, I am using Lotus Notes R6.5.

Thank you very much.

46. Ray Davies02/21/2007 02:29:43 AM

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the V3 with V2 handshake tip. Just one mistake in your post. You must of course accept the SSL cert or it would not work.

How about this for out of the (in) box thinking. I got so tired of SPAM and SPAM filters that I decided to use our friends at Google to help me out. Here is what I did. On my person doc I accept mail for a number of aliases generally starting with ray-something so I can block bad people when the sell my email address.

What I did was put a redirection doc in my Person Doc to my Google mail account. I then set up my Notes client to pull Gmail POP every few minutes.

The result: After mail passes by my Domino filters it is sent to Google mail where it is virus scanned and spam checked. When I look at my Notes mail, from the internet, it is nice and clean! The same can not be said for my Gmail Spam folder that generaly sits at 2000 Plus untill auto emptied

Added bonus is of course when I go remote I do not have to use DWA but simply gmail.

I would not recommend this for larger systems but I can not see why it would not work. After all each Person Doc gets the redirection and it can be taken off very quickly. The only two issues are security as Gmail will probably scan your mail for bad person words but the Internet would have read the external mail anyway and secondly the Notes client must be running as we can not seem to convince IBM to install a POP pull server. Arghhhh.

Perhaps we should put a justification together for a Domino POP Pull service and send it off to Developement for Domino 9. Let me know what your views are. Also, perhaps we should try and push Google harder to certify Notes as a valid Pop client.

Regards for sunny South Africa!

I have lotus notes 7 (that may not be applicable to my query though)

I can send mail from my 'gmail lotus notes client database' - however when I delete mail in my lotus notes and replicate (or click send and receive) the mail in gmail (web interface) stays there - it does not get deleted. I have been patient and waited a while as well as clicked on refresh many times .. still not deleted.

Any one has any ideas?

How to configure Lotus Notes 7.0.2 for Gmail?
I already tried all the post given above, but no use.

49. Richard Schwartz03/05/2007 06:56:21 AM

I've been running 7.0.2 for months now. My config for GMail works fine, with no changes from what I described above.

50. Lori 03/14/2007 08:47:40 PM

Running IBM Lotus Notes 7.0.2 and when I set it up (initial configuration) I'm abit confused at the settings to choose. I'm a newbie and I'm trying to hook my and up (Yahoo.Rogers Mail) account to Lotus Notes. The receive mail works but the SEND mail doesn't.
These are my settings>>>>>
Location: Internet
Basics, Location Type: Local Area Network?
Location Name: Internet
Internet mail address:
Prompt for time/date/phone: NO
Proxy configuration: [] (nothing in that box)
Default display name: [display primary names]
all of these are empty
TCPIP is checked and LAN0 is also checked
Mail file location: [Local]
Mail file: mail\mylastname.nsf
Domino mail domain: []
INternet domain for Notes address when connecting directly to the internet: [my]
Recipient name type-ahead: [Local Only]
Activate recipient name type-ahead: [On Each Character]
Recipient name lookup: Stop after first match
Mail addressing: Local ONly
Send outgoing mail: directly to INternet
Transfer outgoing mail if: 1 messages pending
Interent Browswer: Notes with INternet Explorer
Retrieve/open pages: from Notes workstation
REPLICATION: set to replication enabled, Immediately when Notes Starts with a 1 minute interval
left that alone PORT 1533, Keep Alive interval 60 seconds
Connect at Notes logon
Protocol: Direct connection using IBM lotus Sametime protocol
left alone BAsics
Accept SSL site Certificates: YES
Accept Expired SSL certs: YES
SSL Protocol version: Negotiated
WEB RETRIEVER: left alone
left alone Trusted hosts: []
Network access from trusted hosts: Allow access to any trusted host
Network access for untrusted hosts: Allow access only to originating host
Trust HTTP proxy: NO
SECONDARY SERVERS: all selections left empty []
Outbound attachment encoding method: Base64
Outbound Mc attachment conversin: BINHEX4.0
Owner: []
Administrators: [] left empty

Is there anything I can do in the beginning when I'm setting up the intial program to make this whole process easier. I'm not even sure if I should be using LAN or's so confusing. I'm running Windows XP off of a Broadband Cable Modem connection????????????
I need to learn LOTUS NOTES by next week as I am starting a new job and know it somewhat but want to be pro. HELP

51. Richard Schwartz03/14/2007 09:52:33 PM

I'm sorry, Lori, but even if you had given me the info from the POP3 Account and SMTP Account config documents, which you didn't, I really am unlikely to be able to help you debug a connection to an ISP that I don't have any access to. You might have better luck with the forums on the IBM developerWorks Lotus site, which you can get to via There are probably thousands of people reading that forum, and maybe one of them uses the same ISP.

52. greg rudowsky03/17/2007 12:01:00 AM

trying to send mail from Lotus notes v8(same problem with v6). i'm not a pc guy... how do i tie and mail) to the connections or accounts. if worked for years then stopped.. may be the port 25 issue i been reading about.. and 587 tks greg (retired old ibmer) i still recive mail just fine

53. Gerry Shappell03/21/2007 06:51:05 PM

Has anyone gotten this to work with 8? I cant get the smtp side to work - "unable to find path to server". Any suggestions are appreciated.

54. Richard Schwartz03/21/2007 07:19:08 PM

@53 Gerry, I haven't tried with 8 beta yet; and so far my only 8 installation is behind a NAT device, a proxy server and a boundary firewall, so I'm not optimistic.

55. Gerry Shappell03/22/2007 04:04:39 PM

Thanks. What about the location document, anything specific for that ?

56. dev03/24/2007 07:36:38 AM

I'm facing the same problem as Gerry facing. Not able to send the email through smtp.
Issue 2:
I have archived several emails with labels in google. Now they are not in the inbox. Any idea on how to bring it them to lotus notes. Because, when i create a pop account, it downloads only the emails in the inbox, but not the archived or sent emails.

kind regards

60. Mike Brown06/05/2007 06:29:08 AM

Works fine on Notes 8 for me. I'm using Beta 3 on Ubuntu Linux.

The only change that I had to make for SMTP was to set Accept SSL certificates to "Yes". Always thought it was odd that the instructions Google gave to Richard said to set this to "no", but Accept expired SSL certificates to yes!

@Mike: Thanks. It's good to know that it's working in Notes 8.

63. Richard Schwartz06/11/2007 06:26:14 PM

Nobody can help you unless you provide detailed information about what is happening.

Check out this IBM technote:

It will tell you how to get Notes to record detailed information that might be helpful in figuring out your problem. I can't make any promises that someone will be able to help you if you post it here, but on the other hand you might even figure it out for yourself if you read through the output.

Hello Richard;

Thanks for your detailed instructions. Now I'm able to send mail from my ln client database, but still have problem with incoming mail.

This is from the debug file:
08/07/2008 14:39:49 [0930:0004-0934:wrepl] POP3Client: Connect: Host, Port 995, Use SSL: 1
08/07/2008 14:39:49 [0930:0004-0934:wrepl] POP3Client: Connect: Attempt to Establish SSL Session Failed. Status: 7291.

thanks in advance

69. Hi guys! I hope somebody can help me, how configure lotus6.5 in gmail, i have not exact idea abuot lotus working with gmail or not01/20/2009 08:41:18 AM

please some one help me i have urgent.

70. Helge12/24/2009 04:04:10 AM

I am using Lotus Notes 8.5 basic
advanced smtp SSL account settings for Gmail Account

Advanced Tab:
Port number=465;
Accept SSL site Certificates: YES
Accept Expired SSL certs: YES
Send SSL certificates when asked=Yes
Verify account server name with remote server's certificate: Disabled;
SSL Protocol version: Negotiated

and it works fine sending mails via

But I found a new Issue with Accout - (hotmail)
Attempting to Connect: Host, Port 587, SSL Port 0, Connecting Domain [-ip address-]
SSL handshake error: 1046h requires TLS encryption
The issue is due to STARTTLS is configured on the server. But Lotus Notes does not give that option in the account document.
MS Outlook 2007 , Thunderbird 3.0 have this option to use TLS

Does somebody know a third party tool same like smtpauth
to use TLS ?

Many providers require SMTP authentication to send E-Mails through their SMTP server. But old mail clients doesn't support the authentication. Now, it's time for SMTPAuth. It adds the authentication so that you still can use your mail client.
