PermaLinkCombat Comment Spam With rel="nofollow"
11:32:57 PM

Google is taking an initiative against comment spam and is encouraging all blog software implementers, and all implementers of software that allows site visitors to create hyperlinks (e.g., forums, and other public collaboration sites) to follow their lead. The solution is fairly simple. Software simply adds the rel="nocomment" attribute to all links created by any visitor. You can read Google's description of the technique here. Presumably, spammers will move on to other targets if they realize that their efforts to boost their page rank can't succeed. This will require widespread adoption to work, though, so let's encourage all implementers of Domino or non-Domino based web collaboration tools to get on board and implement rel="nofollow".

I think the ideal implementation applies the rel="nocomment" attribute to all new vistor-created links, but allows the blog owner -- or moderator in the case of a forum -- to approve links after they are reviewed. This is a less onerous solution than having to review comments before they will appear on the site. The flow of the conversation isn't interrupted, but spammer links won't have the desired effect.
