PermaLinkOy Vey!

I had heard a while back that Harvey Fierstein is assuming the role of Tevye in a Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof. My immediate reaction was that it was a little bit of an odd casting, but I just saw him perform "If I Were A Rich Man" on a morning television show, and now my reaction is Please, somebody! Shoot Me Now! I don't think there could possibly be a worse casting for this role! Fierstein is, in every way possible, totally unconvincing as Tevye. I'm wondering whether the producers are actually insane, or whether they're trying to pull a real-life case of The Producers and put on a deliberate flop. If the latter, I'm not sure if they'll succeed because people might actually go see the show for the novelty, or to see just how badly mis-cast Fierstein is... but I hope not. I hate to see a classic role spoiled.

That's hilarious. I always though Bill Gates would be perfect for the part, if only for the irony....

That was my reaction exactly after seeing the same fiasco on a late-night talk show (I forget which, thanfully).

With sincere apologies to the memories of Herschel Bernardi and Zero Mostel, Chaim Topol is and probably forever will be, MY Tevye. At least in the Fiddler context -- reading Sholom Aleichem's Tevye stories, I see a different person. That person is still not Harvey Fierstein.
