PermaLinkKind Of Cool... But Not Entirely Sure What I Think Of LiquidInformation

Via a mention in the New York Times, I found my way to Liquid Information. One of the things that caught my attention was the fact that the article mentioned that Doug Englebart is involved. Here are a few key points from their main page...

We are aiming to make text more interactive - turning words into hyperwords.

We believe in giving the professional user a more flexible work environment in which he or she can more flexibly navigate through information, change the way it's portrayed and relate it to other information.

This is not about 'links' it's about interactive text - text you can issue commands on, such as 'highlight this word in red' or 'look up the dictionary definition of this word'.

They have several demos set up, including one that you can use to view your own site. I looked at my own blog using LiquidInformation. I'm pretty sure I'd only want the LiquidInformation pop-ups to appear when I ask for them rather than whenever I hover over something, and I couldn't help but notice that it had a bit of a problem with some entity-encoded characters in the titles of my posts, but overall it was a pretty interesting experience. I saw a product with similar capabilities (I don't recall the name) at Lotusphere a few years ago, but it was Windows-based rather than browser-based.

I encourage you to have a look at it. I'm interested in knowing what others think of it.

One more thing. The principal creator of LiquidInformation, Frode Hegland, has a blog, and it's one of the few I've seen that is not presented in reverse chronological order. I'm not sure if there's any significance to that, but then again it seems to me that someone who cares about helping people navigate through information is pretty likely to have put some thought into the order of presentation in his blog.
