When any community lasts long enough, loss is inevitable. This is true of a virtual community every bit as much as any other type, and a loss in a virtual community is every bit as much of a loss. An unexpected loss in a virtual community is no less of a shock, and the sadness of the community is just as palpable.
I just heard from Scott Good, President of Teamwork Solutions, that his colleague Bill Ernest passed away last week at age 47. Bill has been involved with Notes since the release 1 beta, has been involved in the development of three different workflow development products for Notes, and he has been a very active participant in Lotus' Business Partner forum and the Lotus Developer Domain forums, amongst other things. Bill was a modest and very friendly guy, and I always looked forward to seeing him whenever members of our community got together at conferences and the like. I will miss him, and surely the whole Lotus community will too.
I will post additional details if and when I get them.
Update: Here's a link to the tribute to Bill that Scott Good posted in his blog.
