This post showed up in Blogdigger search today. The blogger in question has an Excel spreadsheet that she wants to import into her Notes contacts. Seems like a reasonable thing to want, and it can be done, of course. I noticed that Ed replied, and so did I but. but I don't have a simple explanation because it's not simple, is it? All I did was provide some general instructions to save the Excel sheet to 1-2-3 format, build a private view that matches the columns, and then do the import, Simple for a Notes developer. Not simple for users.

So, I thought I'd put out the word to other Domino bloggers, just in case any of you have ever written good documentation specific to the topic of importing into contacts. or (better yet!) have some general purpose code specifically built for importing contacts into a personal address book from an Excel spreadsheet, you can undoubtedly help make a Notes users happy.

OK, maybe this is the thing that should be a part of Notes/Domino. Simple little wizard which would ask about target database, field mappings etc. I have created sort of a function for importing from Excel but it is rather a developer tool to integrate into another code...
Something for general use by "normal" users would be great.
I know it would be a huge amount of work/time - so that is the reason I have not created it yet. And there might be another problems, too...

It's pretty simple. No private view required.
Here's the steps:,outlook

Granted, it hasn't been updated for R6, but she'll probably be OK. I did it for an Admin2005 demo and it worked OK.

I also wrote how to do it for an E-pro mag article. I can't get to it online anymore, but I should be able to dig it up if she needs more help. It goes way more into detail.

It's also fascinating (sort of) how difficult it is to import Outlook contacts. One should expect it to be very easy as we all want users to migrate to Notes. But the tool included in the Notes client fails in 50% of all pst files and the only other "easy" way is to pay bucks to BinaryTree for their CMT...
