I have never met Professor Thomas Schelling, but when I was an undergraduate in the Mathematics and Social Sciences program at Dartmouth, his book The Strategy Of Conflict, first published in 1960, came up repeatedly in my coursework and was one of the more important sources of inspiration for my thesis project. I've still got a copy, somewhere, though it's been many a year since I referred to it. I'll have to dig it out from wherever it's hiding. It's an important book for just about anyone doing quantitive work and modeling in the social sciences, with a wealth of ideas in the area of game theory that are relevant to multiple disciplines, and it's nice to see that -- after all these years -- its importance has been recognized through a share of 2005 Nobel Prize In Economics.
