Cenk Uyger has posted some rather inflammatory essays up on Huffington Post lately. I have no problem with that at all. In fact, I kind of like much of what he has had to say, and I definitely like the fact that he doesn't pull his punches. I do, however, have a problem with the fact that he made an egregious error of fact in his latest post. If you're writing an essay about Iran, Islam, and the Middle East, you should probably know that Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini died 16 years ago and is therefore not, in Mr. Uyger's words "one of the most powerful religious leaders in the world."

This was not an isolated typo. Mr. Uyger referred to Khomeini three separate times in the essay.

If the majority of Iranians don’t think that way, why are their leaders President Ahmedinejad and Ayatollah Khomeini?

The religious leader of Iran is Ayatollah Ali Khameini. The name is pretty close to Khomeini, but the error is still inexcusable. Khomeini was clearly one of the most important historical figures in the late 20th century, and I think it's fair to say that he was amongst the most important figures in all Islam in the past few centuries. Someone who wants to be taken seriously on the subjects of Iran, the Middle East, Islam, and religion in general simply can't make that mistake.

My response on Huffington informing him of his error and suggesting that he may want to consider hiring a fact-checker has not yet been posted despite the fact that I submitted it several hours ago, nor has the error been corrected. They screen all responses before posting them, so it may just be taking some time. Too bad they don't screen their posts as carefully, but then again... why hold them to a higher standard than Forbes?

Update: My comment has finally been published on Huffington Post.

Update 2: Several other commenters have now pointed out the error as well, and the author has corrected it now, but without acknowledging the change. No "oops!". No "Correction!". No strikethrough. Just a revision of the copy.
