Anybody have any experience with the Targus Universal Notebook AC Adapter? It's too late for FedEx shipping, so I might as well wait until morning before I try and order anything. I might be able to get the Targus locally, though, which would get me something quicker... but whether it will be compatible with my Dell Inspiron 4100 is an unknown.

Probably too late, but if you're careful choosing the right package, it'll work. The jack tips provided are key -- if they include one for your Dell, it'll work, but there are a crapload of different tips, and the "Universal" adapter is generally packaged with about half of the selection -- buy the wrong package, and it won't have your tip, but it WILL have a tip for every conceivable model of portable electronic device you don't have. The tip is not just a fit/no fit thing, it also sets the output voltage regulation (max is, IIRC, about 21V, which is higher than any notebook I've seen).

Apart from that, the Targus runs hot -- wa-a-ay hot -- and the FCC "Class B" rating appears to be wishful thinking. It feeds a lot of junk back into the AC and oozes RF at a prodigious rate. One of those collar-style RF chokes might help with the radiated garbage, but the AC feedback will definitely muck up people's TVs and AC-powered radios for a couple of blocks in any direction. (Yes, it is that bad.)

Thanks Stan. Problem solved. My client had a spare adapter that fits, and so far the laptop hasn't exploded
