GoogleIt Mail IT Print IT PermaLinkZatz DominoPower RSS Feed: WTF??
03:27:12 PM

Jack Dausman menitoned that DominoPower now has an RSS feed, so I figured I'd subscribe. Forty articles came in the first batch, including this one: Senators press for spying details. Eight were relevant to IBM (and that's including the DominoPower article announcing the RSS feed, so I'm being generous). Two were relevant to Lotus. One was relevant to Domino. The remainder were all articles that I've seen before with general IT-related news (loosely related in the case of several, like the one above), mostly from InfoWorld but some from eWeek.

I suppose some people might expect a DominoPower RSS feed to be a single source for all one's IT industry news, but that's not what I expected.

I am unsubscribed.

That was one of the reasons I unsubscribed from the Websphere newsletter they put out. There was never any Websphere articles, only "wrap-up of news" that often was not even specific to Websphere. And how they sold advertising for that one I'll never know.

I found it a waste also.

Has anybody offered them this feedback?

Not me. No "Contact" link on the home page. None on the page with info about the feeds. Not worth my time looking further. Will leave that to someone else.

I, too, was underwhelmed by the landslide of rubble that rushed out of the RSS feed. I expected it to be limited to the monthly publications, but it covers the daily newsletter content--which is simply too unfiltered for an RSS feed.

It's an example, isn't it, of a media distributor adjusting to new distribution techniques. DominoPower was the first Domino web magazine that began on the web, and they did it well (outlasting at least one provider), and now they have to adjust to the next technology of RSS. Sounds like something out of Ecclesiastes.

Cue Pete Seeger and Roger McGuinn:

For every webzine,
Turn, turn, turn,
There is a feed on,
Turn, turn, turn,
But no time for all that content,
In my reader.

Saw your comments. They're fair. We thought about breaking the feeds out for different interests, but it seemed to conflict with the idea of auto-discovery. After seeing these comments, we'll be sure to break out and create an articles-only feed. It won't happen immediately, but it'll go onto our site programming to-do list. Stay tuned to DominoPower and we'll let you know when it happens.

Thanks for listening, David! I will stay tuned.

Well, uh, turns out "won't happen immediately" means it took almost 2 1/2 years , but we've finally got them, as of today. You can subscribe to an articles-only DominoPower feed at:

This is Day-One of our availability, so, uh, you might be helping us test the feature, but it's here. So never let it be said we don't listen-ish.
