GoogleIt Mail IT Print IT PermaLinkLotusphere 2008 Wireless: Did Anyone Ever Get An IP In Dolphin Southern Hemisphere Rooms
09:05:56 AM

I've been meaning to post about this for a few days. I'm just wondering if it was me, or a general problem. During this past week, whenever I tried to set up for live-blogging a session in one of the Southern Hemisphere rooms in the Dolphin, I got a nice strong wireless signal of four or five bars; but I got "limited or no connectivity" every time. I never got an IP address from the DHCP servers while I was in those rooms. It seemed to work well elsewhere. How about you?

Same here. I thought it was only me too !

I did, eventually, hammering away at the renew dhcp lease button on my ipod touch for 10 mins.

It seems there were not enough IP addresses in the pool in that area.

I got an address (eventually) but the quality of the link wasn't very usable.

Overall wireless connectivity throughout the week was marginal at best. Many dropped connections. When I was connected, browsing was painfully slow and "modem-like". I spent most of the week connected through my Blackberry as a modem.

One of the suggestions I gave on the eval form was the poor wireless service.

I had the same problem... most frustrating. Every few minutes, "limited or no connectivity". I was in the Swan!

Same here! I believe they had some home-user WLAN gateway with limited DHCP capasity!

Do I get to double points if my connectivity problems occurred from the podium? The "Sametime all the Time" room was in S. Hemisphere IV-V all week, and all of the presenters had at best intermittent problems from the stage. For my last session (which was in the last time slot on Thursday) we had perfect connectivity until... 1 minute *after* the session started. And then nothing for the rest of the session - not hard wired, not wireless.

And to make matters worse, I figured that after 18 hours of slideware the previous 4 days, I'd mix things up and intro with 3 or 4 slides and then just do Sametime demos the rest of the session. The session attendees seemed to bear with us, though, although I was disappointed not to be able to show things live.

Each time I kept on trying, and after a while (after 15 minutes or so) I always got an ip address.

Not that that really did something good, as the connection was sooooo slooooooooowwwwww.

Same as last year actually

WiFi was awful this year. Simply not reliable or usable.

Actually, signal in there was solid but throughput sukt. I spent ten minutes during Mooney's "AdminBlast" session trying to connect to Flickr and upload two 3Mb pictures. They eventually went through, but the same thing upstairs on the hardwired line took maybe 20 seconds.

Yep, spotty connectivity again this year. I thought it was also funny the Online Evaluations were offline most of Tuesday/Wednesday. Doh!
